When the Mohrenbräu beer tent at the Herbstmesse fills with tense silence and hearty laughter, it’s clear: the VN prize Jass has begun again. Four hundred Jass enthusiasts from across the country have gathered to take part in an afternoon full of excitement and camaraderie. It’s the largest prize Jass tournament in Vorarlberg and much more than just a competition.

Jass is deeply rooted in Vorarlberg. Generations have passed down the game, from the parlor to the festival tent bench. At the Herbstmesse, this tradition is given a stage that honors its cultural value. Around 100 tables are ready, where up to 400 players prove their skills in two rounds. The game is played according to the classic Vorarlberg rules of prize Jass – with a fixed trump suit, no Stöck or Wies, but with plenty of passion.
But it’s not just about points. It’s about connection. When grandparents play with grandchildren or neighbors with colleagues, a sense of togetherness arises that goes beyond the game. The Jass afternoon thus becomes a cross-generational place of community.

The process is clearly regulated: two rounds, four players per table, each playing individually. The table draw is redone before each round. After each game, a scorekeeper notes the points, checks the total, ensuring fairness and clarity. Only when all cards have been played does it get really exciting: one of three secret trick numbers is drawn. Whoever’s score is closest can look forward to one of the many prizes.

A well-known Jass expert guides the afternoon. With expertise, experience, and humor, he ensures that both professionals and newcomers feel welcome. And even those who don’t make it to the winners’ podium don’t leave empty-handed: every participant receives a prize. The collected entry fees are donated to a charitable cause.
