Gustav brings authentic craftsmanship to life and unites unique pieces from regional workshops and manufactories. Sharply forged Japanese knives meet custom-made millinery art. Delicate glass creations set accents for table culture, while artistic furniture uniques made from recycled materials demonstrate practical approaches to lived sustainability.
In the culinary sector, artisanal production is also the focus. Alongside characterful wines from regional winemakers, local oil manufactories offer award-winning cooking and pumpkin seed oils from Austrian fields. Handcrafted paper art as well as unique pieces from blacksmithing complement the range and have been a staple of the fair for years.
Special exhibition Herat Glass: Historic glassblowing art from Afghanistan
The special exhibition Herat Glass puts an ancient craft at the center. The artisans shape mouth-blown vases, carafes, drinking glasses, and fine objects from resource-conserving recycled glass over an open clay fire. They work entirely without machines or prefabricated molds. Characteristic air bubbles and traditional colors like azure blue, shimmering green, or amber give each piece a lively surface texture.
“It was important to us to make visible a craft tradition that has existed for 2,700 years and is now threatened with extinction. Every glass piece carries this knowledge forward a little.”
Stefan Grabher from the Vorarlberg textile company Mary Rose initiated the cultural project together with ZEIT journalist Wolfgang Bauer. It helps preserve and pass on the old craft tradition of the Herat region.
Gentlemen’s Room: A space for style, craft, and lifestyle
The Gentlemen’s Room sets its own thematic focus at Gustav. It’s about craftsmanship, grooming, style, scents, drinks, and music. This area is aimed at everyone interested in fine craftsmanship, individual details, and special products.
A barber demonstrates his craft live on site, a tattoo artist offers insights into his work, and shoe shining focuses on the care of classic shoes. A men’s outfitter and selected textiles complement the range with clothing and fabrics.
Enjoyment is also part of the concept. Whiskey and rum are available for tasting, and the team from PIER69 serves selected cocktails. Scents and perfumes, design classics, and music on vinyl complete the area.
Gustav by Night invites you to an evening stroll
A highlight is the “Gustav by Night”: From 5:00 p.m., guests can enjoy an atmospheric interplay of light, sound, and culinary delights. With fine drinks, regional specialties from PIER69, and the right beats from a DJ, the evening format offers the perfect setting for personal conversations and a first tour of the fair.
Gustav is the ideal meeting place for everyone who wants to discover beautiful things for their own home and be inspired by creative ideas. Those who want to order selected products even after the fair can now find, until one week after the event, handpicked wines, vinegar, organic meat directly from the farm, handcrafted glasses, and jewelry in the Gustav Selection online shop.
